CLASSES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Family party rolling out clay

Tiles decorated by 5 - 6 year olds

Drying shelves
Classes are kept small – 6 - 8 is an optimum number. Old clothes are advisable but T- shirts, which can act as cover-alls, are available. Warm clothes in the winter months are a necessity.
Children over 6 years old get the maximum benefit from making pots, although younger ones can also join in.
There is no upper age limit on learning how to make pots!
Hand Building
Budding potters can choose what they make while being guided to discover the different pottery techniques. Clay can be rolled out flat and then laid in a mould ready to decorate; or the flat clay can be decorated as a sign or tile with raised lettering or decoration. The rolled clay can also be made into a vase or mug. Pinch pots turn into all manner of creatures, faces etc., or there is the coil pot technique. There is usually time to put some colour decoration on the creations. The pots are fired and glazed once they are dry. They are usually ready to collect in about 3 – 4weeks.
Potter’s Wheel
I also teach how to make pots on the potter’s wheel. I have two wheels, one electric and a kick wheel. Making a pot on the wheel involves a fair amount of strength, I suggest a minimum age of 10.
The emphasis is on having fun, getting mucky and not to have to worry about it
